Support for Dr. Wang Bingzhang: Chinese Democratic Party Overseas United Headquarters in London

On December 29, 2024, the Chinese Democratic Party Overseas United Headquarters held an event in London to support Dr. Wang Bingzhang. The theme of the event was to call for the immediate release of Dr. Wang by the Chinese government and to raise international awareness of his plight. The event was attended by Party Chairman Ma Yinglai, Vice Chairman Cui, Organization Minister Zhang Bin, and other party members, aiming to highlight his case and reaffirm support for democratic values.

Dr. Wang Bingzhang’s Contributions and Current Situation

Dr. Wang Bingzhang is a pioneer and key leader in China’s pro-democracy movement. In 1982, he founded China Spring, the first publication of the Chinese overseas democracy movement, and actively advocated for China’s democratization. However, in 2002, Dr. Wang was abducted in Vietnam and brought back to China, where he was sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of “espionage” and “leading a terrorist organization.” His case has since become a focal point of international concern over China’s human rights situation.

For over 20 years, Dr. Wang has been detained under harsh conditions. Reports suggest his health has severely deteriorated due to prolonged imprisonment. His ordeal highlights the Chinese government’s strict stance on dissenting voices.

The core theme of the event was “Free Dr. Wang Bingzhang.” Through this action, the organizers aimed to convey the following key messages:

1. Immediate Release of Dr. Wang Bingzhang: His detention is unjust and must be brought to an end.

2. Call for International Attention: Sustained international pressure is crucial to push for human rights improvements in China.

3. Support for Democratic Values: Supporting Dr. Wang is not just about his case but about standing up for democracy and freedom.

Dr. Wang is a symbol of the pursuit of democracy and justice. His imprisonment illustrates the high price of standing up for one’s beliefs under an authoritarian system. Yet, his resilience continues to inspire many.

This event in London was a practical demonstration of support for Dr. Wang and showcased the commitment of overseas Chinese communities to democratic ideals. Despite being far from home, participants peacefully and rationally expressed their demands and called for global solidarity.

Following the event, the Chinese Democratic Party Overseas United Headquarters plans to amplify international awareness of Dr. Wang’s case. By collaborating with human rights organizations, media outlets, and international bodies, they aim to maintain momentum and ensure his plight is widely known. They also intend to host more events to advocate for his release.

Dr. Wang Bingzhang’s freedom is not only about individual rights but also a symbol of progress in China’s democratic journey. This event is a critical step in advancing the cause of democracy and human rights. With persistent efforts, justice and freedom will eventually prevail
